Citrus Aurantium For Fat Loss

Bitter Orange Peel Side Effects – Weight Loss Ingredient and Herbal Stimulant

The fruit of Citrus aurantium AKA Bitter Orange Peel has been used in China as a medicinal herb for decades. This has caused many health and supplement companies to use it in products targeted towards fat loss. But why?

Colker et Al. discovered in 1999 that weight loss was affected when Citrus aurantium was used in a study. A test group which supplemented with Bitter Orang Peel shown a decrease in overall weight over a period of time.

After this successful study by Colker, the Department of Physiology, Medicine, and Pathology in Georgetown, which is the place of the University Medical Center in Washington, USA, decided to study the effects of Citrus aurantium more in depth to see what results it produced.

The study showed that the USA was suffering from an overweight and obese issues in many people across the country. Many pharmaceutical companies produced many weight loss drugs to try and help the country lose weight.

They said that “Citrus aurantium was a viable substitute for ephedra.”

What Is Orange Peel?

Orange peel extract comes from what is known as the Seville orange, Citrus aurantium or bitter orange. Bitter orange peel has been widely used for centuries in Chinese medicine and in Amazon tribes as a herbal supplement for nausea and indigestion.

It’s also been used to suppress appetite to help in weight loss plans. Along with being used as a nasal congestion and a treatment for fungal skin infections.

However, it’s always said to be used with caution as Bitter Orange peel extract as it causes side effects.

General Stimulant Effects

Orange peel contains synephrine, which is what produces the stimulating effects similar to Ephedra. Which is a substance which the Food and Drug Administration banned in weight loss products in 2004.

The ingredient, Ephedra, has been linked to stroke and heart attack in people using the now banned substance.

The general stimulating effects that is experienced from synephrine is the feeling of nervousness or restlessness including trouble sleeping.

If you are to supplement with a product containing caffeine, be cautious that the stimulating effects may be increased when mixed with synephrine – bitter orange peel.

The extent of the orange peel side effects are unknown. Always consult with your doctor before trying this aggressive substance.

Risks Taking Synephrine

Side effects such as cardiovascular and high blood pressure, hypertension, arrhythmias (irregular heart rhythms) are all linked and possibly caused by taking Synephrine.

It can also produce a faster heart rate, fainting, heart palpitations as well as chest pain.

It’s important that you should avoid products that contain orange peel or any version of it until you have talked to your doctor. Especially if you have a family history of heart problems

Vision Problems and Weakness  

One more potential side effect of orange peel is the large feeling of weakness or paralysis on one side of the body.

This could or could not be followed by vision problems. For instance, you could find that your vision has become blurred and that you might not be able to focus properly.

Also, orange peel, in theory, may degenerate and narrow-angle glaucoma says wellness.com. One more side effect could be seizures, as orange peel has been shown to aggravate underlying symptoms if not kept in check, according to EMedTV.com. Immediate medical assistance should be asserted if any of these symptoms occur.

Hyperthyroidism and Headaches

Synephrine (bitter orange peel) may produce migraines and headaches. Also, people with hyperthyroidism should be very careful when taking this ingredient and anything with orange peel extract may also aggravate thyroid conditions.

Ischemic Colitis

Ischemic colitis is a very serious potential side effect of the ingredient orange peel says EMedTV.com. The gastrointestinal condition shows these side effects: abdominal cramping and or pain, severe diarrhea with bloody stools, vomiting, and a high fever

If you ever feel, or begin to experience any one or several of these side effects/symptoms, seek medical advice immediately.

Is Citrus aurantium good for your health?

As with most fat burners on the market, they are now filling them up with orange peel. Citrus aurantium has powerful compounds that are not just from Synephrine. It’s highly said that one should not take other stimulants with Citrus aurantium (bitter orange peel – Synephrine) as one may experience the side effects as in the list below.
